The US war on drugs has been, at best, a miserable failure. "Chasing the dragon" has been a case of "right war-wrong battlefield". The real terrorists don't live in distant, remote al-Qaeda training bases in the mountains of Afghanistan or Pakistan. They live in the poppy fields of the world!
The vast majority of opium poppies are grown in a narrow, 4,500-mile stretch of mountains extending across southern Asia from Turkey through Pakistan and Laos, from laboratories in faraway places such as Bangkok, Thailand or Hong Kong, China, this vast network reaching all away around the world to Colombia and greater Latin America.
It's a cruel hoax, this war, formerly known to us as the "Global War On Terror". This malignant cancer of drug addiction or "flower of joy", as the ancient Sumerians once called it, has become our hidden taskmasters, killing hundreds of thousands more Americans than all of al-Qaeda has with hijackers, bullets, and road-side bombs combined-and it is the single greatest threat to our national security. More of my rant under the fold...
